Strategic Pillar: Climate Change

Program Strategy: Resilience Through Ubuntu

Our program strategy translates the principles of Ubuntu into actionable, region-specific initiatives focused on creating self-sustaining, resilient communities in both urban and rural environments.

Goal: To enhance community resilience to climate shocks and actively promote localized adaptation and mitigation solutions, recognizing that a healthier planet starts with a smokeless home and protected forests.

Key Activities
Expected Outcome

A. Clean Energy & Health

Uganda (Rural)

1. Household Transition: Distribute renewable energy technologies—such as solar and clean biomass—to replace traditional polluting fuels.

2. Clean Cooking: Prioritize electric pressure cookers, solar, or ethanol to eliminate the 1 gigaton of annual GHG emissions from residential cooking.

Reduction in respiratory disease for women and children; drastic decrease in indoor air pollution and household-level carbon emissions.

B. Forest & Waste Resilience

Uganda (Rural)

1. Carbon Sink Protection: Strengthen local livelihoods to provide economic alternatives to charcoal production and stop deforestation.

2. Water & Waste: Fund rainwater harvesting and community-led composting/waste segregation.

Preservation of hectares of forest that serve as carbon sinks; improved sanitation and reduced environmental pollution.

C. Urban Heat Mitigation

Brooklyn, NY

1. Green Infrastructure: Partner with gardens for green roofing, tree planting, and permeable pavement.

2. Awareness: Run workshops on preparing for extreme weather events like heat waves and flooding.

Measurable reduction in the urban heat island effect; increased community preparedness for climate hazards.

D. Policy & Local Advocacy

Both Regions

1. Health-First Policy: Advocate for clean cooking and renewable energy adoption as critical climate mitigation strategies.

2. Local Engagement: Support leaders in incorporating community input into climate action plans.

Systemic integration of community-led solutions into regional and global climate policy frameworks.
